The Hanseatic city of Greifswald and the Ernst Moritz Arndt University had already begun planning for a specialist technology and start-up centre in1993, long before the bioregio-boom caught on in Germany. This planning finally came to fruition in1996 following a year’s planning and 2 years’ construction time.
It is the task of the BioTechnikum to promote scientific development in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in a sustainable manner. This is achieved particularly via the support given to young businesses in the sectors of biotechnology, biology, biomedicine and also bioinformatics.
The centre currently provides 30 tenants with ideal working conditions for the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine.
November 2004 saw the start of an expansion programme to create additionally required laboratory and office rental space. This was completed and celebrated with a ceremonial handing over of the rooms to the prospective tenants on 21 August 2006.
